The AnPro instant digital cooking thermometer is a long stemmed, fantastic cooking thermometer which will find a welcome home in pretty much anyone’s kitchen. It’s not the most advanced product in the world, but it’s accurate, cheap, and has a wide range of uses.
AnPro DT-10 Instant Read Digital Cooking Thermometer Review
“Instant Read” might be some of a misnomer, but the fact of the matter is that the DT-10 takes its readings in only a couple of seconds, which makes it a fine choice for the kitchen. Many probes that claim to be fast can still take up to half a minute to give you a reading, which can put both you and it in a precarious situation.
It’s not just a meat thermometer like a lot of kitchen products, this one can read anywhere from -58°F to 572°F. That’s something of a feat in a world where most kitchen thermometers in the same price range can only read to the temperature of a well done steak.
In addition to this, the probe is long and tapered enough to slide into meat while the thermometer itself is light enough to quickly read just about anything. Whether you’re making candy, baking, or cooking a perfect roast you’ll find a fantastic use for the DT-10 without having any issues.
It comes with a probe cover that can be clipped to the pocket as well. You won’t have to leave this one lying around on the counter just like the Digihandy digital cooking thermometer.
The probe itself is made of 304 stainless steel, so it’s not quite antimicrobial but you’ll find it easy enough to clean and don’t have to worry about rust and corrosion over time.
Those who cook things other than food will be able to find a use for it as well, whether you’re making candles or soap the safe range of this thermometer is astounding and lends it to widespread uses.
The LCD screen is large and easy to read.
It’s also amazingly accurate, which is great when it comes to highly sensitive applications. The fact that it’s under ten bucks and offers all of this utility is simply amazing.
The Bad Stuff
The first thing most people will notice is that you have to hold the DT-10 the whole time you’re using it. The clip on the cover is made of plastic and it won’t be of any use and it won’t stand up to the temperatures inside an oven for long.
The thin probe makes up for this a little bit, but this isn’t a “stick and forget” thermometer by any means. You’ll have to actively use it in order to get the benefits.
While the build-quality of the thermometer itself is quite high, the probe case leaves a lot to be desired. The plastic clip is sure to break over a prolonged period of time and it has a tendency to work loose after awhile.
It’s also not waterproof, which can be a problem if you fumble it near a pot containing liquids. It’s a pretty major oversight for this kind of thermometer, and it doesn’t seem to even be splash resistant so take care not to get it wet.
Frankly, the whole thing seems to find an excuse to quit working fairly quickly in a lot of people’s hands. The low price point means ordering a couple isn’t a huge investment but most people would rather spend a few extra bucks and not have to worry if this is the time it’s going to break down.
It also goes through batteries quite quickly. This would be less of a problem if it didn’t utilize expensive batteries, most people find they only last a couple of months with regular usage. In most places it’s actually cheaper to replace the whole thing than it is to replace the batteries.
This means it’s most suited for those who are rarely going to use it. It’s not exactly ideal for the chef in a commercial kitchen and those who use one frequently at home may want to seek out something a little bit more expensive and a little bit more durable at the end of the day.
- Instant Temp Reading Within a few seconds
- #1 Best Seller with 4 star Customer Rating
- 5″ probe to keep you safe from hot foods
- It is not waterproof
- So have expressed longevity issues
This is a good food thermometer for those who aren’t using one frequently. The low price point means you should probably buy a few. While the thermometer itself is rather wonderful, it just doesn’t have the lifespan that one would hope for but that’s better than receiving an inaccurate one.
Keep the above in mind when you make your purchase and you shouldn’t be unhappy with what you receive. It’s a versatile and useful little device, it’s just not made for the rigors that it might experience with frequent use.
