To put that into context with units of measurement that you’re probably more familiar with, 1 second equals 1000 milliseconds. So, 500 milliseconds equals half of a second. And if you don’t consider each area’s temperature, then you might be left with inaccurate results.

So Avantek’s thermometer utilizes dual lasers. Each laser retrieves a thermal reading on each area. The unit them calculates the median temperature between the 2 areas, to give the user a final temperature reading. This can prove to be more accurate than a single laser unit, due to the average temperatures being calculated from 2 independent readings.

But it’s not all lollipops and rainbows…

Sure, Avantek’s dual laser infrared thermal thermometer has a 4.5 star rating on Amazon. And sure, it offers to advanced tech that gives it a competitive edge regarding accuracy. But that’s not to say the this is a perfect unit. And one of the most noticed negativity is its marketing.

Avantek markets this device as both an industrial thermometer and cooking thermometer. And it certainly serves great as an industrial thermometer. However, some should be a little cautious considering this to a cooking thermometer.

Laser thermometers are great at reading surface temperatures. They use the lasers to calculate the thermal radiation emitting from the surface. But when cooking meat, the user will want to know what the internal temperature is, so that they can eat comfortable, knowing that all bacteria has been killed. And it’s difficult to know the internal temperature from the surface.

But not only is the advertising a little misleading, there have been other instances of dissatisfaction mentioned regarding the battery housing unit. But you can’t fault them in creating a hearty device meant to hold up to industrial environments. But for the end user, it can prove to be a little overkill.


In conlusion, this unit rocks…

Overall, the Avantek Infrared Thermometer is great. It’s dual laser capacity gives the a more accurate reading. And it’s emissivity controls allow the user to make the appropriate adjustments so that the unit can provide the best possible readings. And even though this technically should not be used as a meat thermometer, the surface temperature of a steak or chicken breast will be close enough to the internal temperature that it wouldn’t be too taboo to use this as a meat or cooking thermometer.
